How to Clean Up Syntax on Website Content

website clean up

While writing the code for your website or using a code editor to create your website and remove syntax, you should always check the hierarchical order and syntax of the programming code. Making mistakes is human, but don’t worry, this article talks about how to do a website clean up once you finish coding.

Many a time, you might face errors while pasting content onto website pages directly from external sources such as Word or MS Excel, another code editor, or even an e-mail. You might also make genuine typos while writing the code or moving the content from one page to another.

Empty hyperlinks are common problems one can face while using code editors to remove syntax. These hyperlinks are just bits and pieces of code with no real content.

You might not notice the extra code during the development phase of your website, but it will always show up during the testing time of the website before publishing it.

A few of the ways for website clean up are –

Use Coding Tools Like DreamWeaver

Take advantage of any specific tools your coding application may propose for this activity to aid in the cleanup process. For example, Dreamweaver has a Find and Replace tool, a Spell Checker, a Word Clean Up command, a Code Clean Up command, a Source Formatting tool, and a Convert Syntax tool that can automate the cleanup process within any managed site.

In addition, several internet tools can scan your pages for specific faults and assist you in identifying the issues in the code. One of the disadvantages of using online tools is that many of them only let you enter one URL at a time, which, while thorough, can make the cleanup process tiresome.

The Find and Replace function is one of the most powerful features in most HTML coding editors. You can search for and optionally replace or delete any text, source code, or specific tag across a whole page, selected pages, a defined folder, or an entire managed site with one single tool.

Open the document that includes the spelling error and choose the misspelled word or phrase to replace it with new text across all pages in a managed Dreamweaver site. To enter the Find and Replace dialogue box, select Edit -> Find and Replace.

  1. To modify a category page, go to that category’s page.
  2. All material on the page should be highlighted and selected (Ctrl-A)
  3. Take a copy of the content (Ctrl C)
  4. Paste (Ctrl V) content into a Notepad or Textedit document (PC users) (Mac users).

Once you have rectified all the coding syntax errors behind the scenes, let us come to the website content.

To learn how to do your website clean up, here are a few of the ways.

Gather Data from Google Search Analytics

  1. To begin with this, first ‘Search Analytics‘ on your dashboard. The first step is to go to Google Search Console and get information on the pages receiving the most impressions yet a low click-through rate (CTR).
  2. Then check for ‘Clicks, Impressions, and CTR,’ select ‘Pages’ from the radio button next, select the ‘Impressions’ column and drag the arrow downwards to order pages by top analytics
  3. To export the data to Google Docs or CSV, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the ‘Download’ option.

Format Data

To format data, structure the spreadsheet appropriately and add ‘Action’ elements to each post to make it actionable. Each post will be labeled with one of the four options below –

Keep it: Keep it if the post is on-brand and sufficient as is.

Remove: Remove the content if it is entirely unrelated to your brand’s values. For example, if your site is about building businesses, and you have a post from a few years ago about ‘how to get an internship,’ that’s off-brand.

Consolidate: Consolidate the content if the resource is too short. It needs to be merged with other similar resources to create a longer-form post, or there’s already something better than you can 301 redirect this post to maintain your SEO equity.

Improve: The content might use a few tweaks to keep it current. For example, Google is constantly making significant changes to its algorithm in the SEO business, so if your article is titled “The Complete Guide to Google’s Updates,” you will need to update it anytime a new update is released.

Content clean up or audits may seem time-consuming. But they’re necessary to ensure that your visitors can feel the best possible experience when they visit your website. User experience encompasses a website’s overall functionality and intuitiveness and its content.

Removing material to promote traffic may seem contradictory, but consider what Google is attempting to accomplish: organizing the world’s knowledge. If your site becomes increasingly irrelevant, the search engine will prioritize traffic to other, more deserved results.
